Letter to the Editor
- by Joan Phaup
“A letter from CM Everett on July 28 recommended forming a land trust to address the housing shortage he described as a “major issue in our region.”
Many other concerned community members heartily agree, so they established the MidCoast Regional Housing Trust last year.
Like other housing trusts in Maine and throughout the country, MCRHT will create housing by renovation or construction. We will acquire and reserve buildings or land for working households through deed covenants, land lease restrictions, and other methods. We aim to keep renting and home ownership accessible to workers in health care, emergency services, education, retail, hospitality, and other fields to provide services we all rely on every day. Enabling medium-income households, including workers in skilled trades, to live and thrive within our communities is critical to our region’s sustainability and well-being.
The City of Rockland has designated MCRHT as a partner in addressing its housing crisis, and the Trust also hopes to partner with other municipalities. Having achieved nonprofit status this year, the Trust seeks projects in Knox County and neighboring towns. Our organization’s website, mcrht.org, provides details and updates.
We welcome anyone who wants to join our effort or receive our newsletter to email us at info@mcrht.org.
Yours sincerely,
Jonathan Goss, Rockport
MCRHT Board President”
